Grunge pioneer band Soundgarden was formed in Seattle in 1984 by Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, and Hiro Yamamoto. Soundgarden popularized heavy metal within alternative rock, even obliterated the line separating the two subcultures. Their music contained a similar sense of adventure, often taking detours into psychedelia, unconventional guitar tunings, and complicated time signatures.
