Since emerging from Brooklyn, New York in 1999, the National have blended elements of alternative country-rock, Americana, chamber pop, and post-punk into their moody, crafted rock. Their earliest albums won a dedicated fan base and critical praise before they made an impact on the charts with their fourth LP, 2007's Boxer. The band is exploring literate rock that presents at first as artily sombre, and eventually as one of the most nuanced 21st-century iterations of what used to be known as "college rock"
