A leader of the sophisti-pop movement throughout the 1980s, Everything But the Girl became an unlikely success story during the mid-'90s, emerging at the vanguard of the fusion between pop and electronica. Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt formed the duo in 1982 and began making hushed, jazzy folk-pop, releasing a string of albums that earned gold certifications. The group's early works have been categorized as sophisti-pop with jazz influences before undergoing an electronic turn following the worldwide success of the 1994 hit single "Missing".
