The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut studio album by The Velvet Underground and German singer Nico, released in 1967. The album was recorded with the first professional line-up of the Velvet Underground: Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker. Artist Andy Warhol designed the album's cover and played a major role in its production. Described as "the original art-rock record", it was a major influence on many subgenres of rock music. Few rock albums are as important as The Velvet Underground & Nico, and fewer still have lost so little of their power to surprise and intrigue more 50 years after first hitting the racks.
